How to Repair Steering Wheel

Steering Repair Tips

The steering wheel is an essential part of a car’s operation system. It is the main controller of the car, which is in turn controlled by the driver. There are mainly two types of steering wheels in cars that have been launched. One is the rack and pinion steering system which is used in the cars driven by the front wheel. Whereas, the rear wheel driving system might be steered by the power steering or the rack and pinion gears.

Steering Repairs

The steering wheel is the main part of the car, so that is why anything that goes wrong with the steering system of the car could turn deadly for the driver. To avoid such mishaps, the drivers should regularly check the steering system of the car, before driving the car. Some of the most common problems that arise in a steering wheel are listed below along with their repair tips.

  • Hard controls: Often a driver finds the steering wheel very rigid and has difficulty in turning in any direction. It feels like the steering system is being dragged by something. There are many reasons for this fault in the steering system of your car; wheel alignment might be improper, there could be low pressure in the tires or there could be a fault in the manufacturing of the steering box. These faults can be diagnosed with a simple visual inspection of the wheels.
  • Engine: There are times when the wheels might produce jerks while driving. This is the result of low idling of the engine. In this case, you should get it fixed by a mechanic.
  • Pump: Another cause of the jerks on the wheels could be the inadequate fluid in the pump or even the malfunctioning of the pump altogether.
  • Friction: The reason for the steering wheel not moving properly could also be that something is stuck in its path of rotation, which is causing friction and giving jumps to the wheel.
  • Vibration: Vibration of the steering wheel at high speeds is often noticed. This vibration could be due to many reasons; brakes could be damaged, the steering wheel could be loose, the wheels could be damaged, the nuts of the wheel could be loosely screwed or the wheels could not be in alignment.
  • Squeaks: Most drivers ignore the squeaky sound which comes from the steering column. This noise could be because of the steering column of the car being damaged or broken. It is better to replace the steering column to reduce further expenses of repairing the column again and again. Have the steering column replaced by the mechanic or you can also do it yourself if you have the right tools with you.
  • Camber aligned: Usually a tire seems to be vertically slanted when you look at it from the front or the back sides. This is called a negative camber. Likewise, a positive camber has an opposite slant. You can visually find out if the camber alignment is negative or not. If the alignment is positive, even by half a degree, you can have a problem with driving on that side.
  • Drag: Sometimes, the driver of the car might feel a drag or a pull in the braking system. This is caused by a sticky caliper or having too much of liquid in the cylinder. You can easily find out this problem by lifting the car with a jack and manually spinning the wheels around.
