Definition:
The EPA's "Significant New Alternatives Policy." This was implemented in July 1994 for the purpose of approving alternative refrigerants for automotive use. Under this rule, a manufacturer must submit refrigerant data to the EPA for review. If the alternative refrigerant is not approved, it cannot be used as a substitute for R12 or R134a. The EPA does not approve any flammable refrigerants any that contain butane, propane or other flammable hydrocarbons), or any that contain CFCs.
